The Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University welcomes applications for 8 doctoral scholarships

The Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS) is a central element of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows". The Cluster's interdisciplinary research focuses on transcultural exchange processes within and between Asia and Europe from historical as well as contemporary perspectives. It connects methods and theories from the humanities and social sciences to challenge the eurocentrism still prevalent in scholarly discourses.

Applicants are expected to propose a doctoral project that can be affiliated with one of the ongoing projects at the Cluster. The Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies is well connected within and outside Heidelberg University, thereby offering an excellent research environment and an international community of scholars. Successful applicants will be incorporated into the dynamic, collaborative atmosphere and a range of mandatory and optional courses will support them in developing transcultural theories and methodologies.

Scholarships start in the winter term of 2011/12, and are granted for two years with the possibility of an extension for an additional year. They are available to both European and Asian students, and amount to € 1000,- per month.

Applicants must hold an M.A. or equivalent in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences with an above-average grade (at least 1.7, B+, 2+, "magna cum laude", or equivalent). The degree has to reflect at least five years of study at university level. Applicants who plan to graduate in 2011 must provide a university transcript that clearly indicates the progress to degree. To apply, please provide a CV, a letter of intention, a project proposal, a schedule for the dissertation, and a letter of recommendation.

Applications are accepted online only. Please use our Online Application System at: https://www.w1system08.de/vjc/intern/start_start_for.php

The deadline for application is March 31, 2011.
